Ericsson research visit: live RIS-assisted communication demo

Erik Nordell, Head of Research at Ericsson, visited our Keysight Lab at Queen's University Belfast on 14 October 2026. I demonstrated RIS-assisted communication using a live video stream.

Changing the RIS phase mask steered the beam away from the receiver and brought throughput close to zero. Steering it back toward the receiver restored throughput and the video played properly again. We also handed Erik a RIS panel so he could inspect its physical design.

Activity highlights

  • The live video stream provided a visible test of the RIS-assisted link.
  • An off-target phase mask directed the beam away from the receiver, reducing throughput to nearly zero.
  • A receiver-aligned phase mask steered the beam back, recovering throughput and smooth video playback.
  • A physical RIS panel was shared for a closer look at its design and construction.

Activity experience

The demonstration connected an abstract phase-mask change to an immediate, observable effect on a real application: the throughput and playback of a live video stream.
